Employment Law Edinburgh lawyers routinely advise employees in relation to pay, sick pay and minimum wage entitlements. Minimum wage is non-negotiable, an employer cannot reach an agreement to pay an employee a lower applicable rate.

As of October 2012 the UK minimum wage rates are:

  • For employees aged 21 and over - £6.19
  • For employees between 18 and 20 - £4.98
  • For employees between 16 and 17 - £3.68
  • Apprentice - £2.68

Workers must be school leaving age, which is usually 16 or over, in order to qualify for Minimum Wage. Any contract with an employee that includes an hourly rate below the minimum wage is not legally binding. Workers including part-time workers, agency workers, casual labourers are entitled to the Minimum Wage.
